Hi all,

thanks for reading. I am having a problem here whereby i have a user, when he wanted to open his archive (.pst) file from the server, it actually prompt him for a password. The headache is that he CANT remember the password and having tried 128 passwords, all failed!
How did he actually set password to his archive files and is there a way to break the password? I have call microsoft and they say we cannot do anything without the password :(
what can i do to help this user get back his archive which is important?

Thanks in advanced.

Regards,
Regina

Regina,

Like any PST file, you can password protect it in the "properties" dialog box.
There is not a MS supported way to removed the password but there is a utility that sometimes works. I have had very mixed results with this.
There is a way out, which is very similar to hacking (The following information is for administrators with good intention to help a bonafide owner of the *.pst file).

You will have to download pst19upg.zip file (please locate the file yourself)

Copy the *.pst file in a new folder and expand the above zip file in the same folder

Run: pst19upg -x *.pst

Run: pst19upg -I *.psx (.psx will be created in the previous step)

Configure the *.pst file obtained in the previous step as Personal folder.

Is it possible to do a restore from before he set the PW?

Good luck.

BB
