I have win2k server installed with ip address, for ex. 169.254.1.1 (255.255.0.0) and I want to promote it to domain controller on mydc.mydomain.com

I have a domain controller(w2k advsvr), mydomain.com created with ip address 169.254.8.1
(255.255.0.0), named mypc1

I have a child domain (w2k advserver) mydc.mydomain.com created with ip address 169.254.1.10 named mypc2
(255.255.0.0)

I can ping the ipaddresses of the computers for both domains, but I cannot ping their names, (cannot ping mypc1 or mypc2)

when I ping the machine names, mypc1 or mypc2, I get "unknown host <computername>". I cannot ping the domain names (mydomain.com, mydc.mydomain.com), either.

What must I prepare for to make my server join the domain mydc.mydomain.com before I dcpromo?

Thanks for any answers, tips, references, etc.!

Gary,

You make no mention of your DNS infrastructure in your posting, and it sounds like it isn't running. You must have a fully functioning DNS infrastructure before running DCPROMO (as I'm sure you've already discovered).
