Hi Windows experts,

I am able to use Telnet on this machine now.... but it is very awkward, does not behave like the other machines that use Telnet.

When I start a Telnet session, I'm stuck in the 'black window' (ie the window that says 'Welcome to Telnet Client...Telnet Client Build 5.0 .... Escape character is CTRL + ]'

What I need is the 'white window' that has the 'Connect' menu item - allowing you to connect to a specific server.

(Of course I can connect by using the 'open' command then enter the IP address....)

We have some users that get the white window automatically when they start a Telnet session.... but I cant determine what is different about their configuration.

I hope I've described my problem clearly enough.

Thanks for any ideas... John

John,

I believe (anybody can correct me if I am wrong) but the white Telnet window that you are used to was a Windows 95/98 telnet application. The telnet application that is now included with Windows 2000 is the one you are seeing. The dos based one.

The only suggestions that I have for you to make it easier for your users is to A) create shortcuts for each of the telnet sites they need to get to or B) Download a different telnet application. I am sure there are tons of free ones out there or buy one that is more sophisticated that supports ssh and the sorts.

Good luck,

-Matt

Matt,
Thanks for your reply.

You are correct - the users here that get the 'white window' have Windows NT 4. And all W2000 Telnet users get the black window.

So we have solved that mystery. Telnet is working - sort of - for the W2000 users.... but the program they run after starting a Telnet session has function keys they need to use to navigate back to the menu, etc.

When they press these function keys in a W 2000 telnet session, nothing happens. I finally figured out how to view/change the emulation setting... tried ANSI... tried VT-100 no luck. Function keys still don't work.
They ARE connecting to the correct server - I've proven that.

I'm lost.
Thanks, John
