I have been asked to have a look at our mail system. The server that holds the priv.edb and pub.edb is an antique and I would like to put a proposal in for a new server.
As I have only been doing exchange for about a month - I do not really know where to start. I know what needs to be done and why, but I need to get it on paper.
I would appreciate any pointers from anybody that has done something similar or has useful information that could assist me in doing this task.
thanks in advance

Basic things to cover:
1. By ancient, I assume it's out of warranty. Warranty is good. Ancient is bad. Ancient can have more expensive parts than new. Ancient is more prone to failure. Disks fail. Fans Fail and cuase overheating, etc. Is ancient fault tolerant? No? Fault Tolerant good. Get HW RAID Controller and redundant power supply for server. Increased uptime. Increased uptime good. Downtime bad.
2. New is faster. Faster is better. Saves users time. Saves admins time. Crank up performace monitor and monitor ancient. Get some stats on CPU, memory, and disk usage. Use these to show how bad current system is.
These are two really good justifications for new hardware.
