I need to move Exhange 5.5 to a new server. What is the best way to do this? Do I have to take the existing server offline, and install the new server with the same computer name as the old, or can I install in onto a machine with a different computer name, then restore the databases to the new machine? Thanks

I too am in this position. My best plan so far was to bring up an additional server within the site and use the moveuser utility. The other option is a backup and restore, but then you have to make sure that all attributes on the new server match the original one (organiziation name, site name, service account, server name, etc.)

I'm planning to make some changes there so I think bringing up a second server temporarily works best for me...

By far the easiest way to move to a new server is to build a new server. When you install Exchange tell it to join an existing site. After the installation you will see both servers in Exchange admin. to move the users mailboxes simply highlight the users bos and select "move mailbox" This moves all of their mail and it also reconfigures the users Outlook client on the fly.
I have done this several time with out problem.

I have done this numerous times.. Both the add an new exchange to the site then migrate the users ( BTW- we had to visit users desktops, unlike what Jstone indicated below). And the second was to create a new server with the same Network Name.
A) Install new server with different name.. and install Exchange to a new site, same ORG as old server, SAME directory paths as Original server..
B) apply exactly same Exchange Service Packs as old server, and also NT Service Packs
C) Shutdown old server services, copy database directories to new server, rename server to SAMENETWORK Name as before..
run isinteg -patch, run also a Directory consistency check..

it works,
