I wonder if anyone can help me...
We have an NT 4.0 Server on SP6 running Exchange Server 5.5 SP4. No mail is going out from the server via the internet mail service but we are recieving messages. Every time that the MTA starts, the Information Store (STORE.EXE) consumes 99% of the CPU. I have tried a variety of MS solutions inc. updating to SP4 and also running a full intergrity check on the EDB files but this revealed no problems. I must confess that I am a bit stuck now.....
There is no mail in the Queues but there are loads of .DAT files in the exchsrvrmtadata directory and I am not sure if they are supposed to be there. Deleting them causes the MTA not to start.
Any ideas?

Since installing SP4 have you run the Exchange Optimizer? It could be some internal parameter that is too low / too high compared to earlier versions.
Cheers, Chris

I would suggest running optimizer and using the limit memory usage check box, then setting this to 96% of the memory currently installed. Hope this helps.

Try stopping your MTA and running MTACHECK /v
