I have a dilemma:

My Exchange 5.5 Server (Win NT 4.0 SP6a) has recently died. I re-built it with new components and have installed NT 4.0 SP6a back on it. Exchange 5.5 is now re-installed also.

I have the following files backed up: Priv.edb, Pub.edb, and Dir.edb.

How can I restore all my mailboxes? I have been reading Microsoft Knowledge Base docs on this and they state:

1. Stop all services.
2. Restore only the Priv.edb and Pub.edb files.
3. Start the "Microsoft Exchange System Attendant" and "Microsoft Exchange Directory" services.
4. Run "isinteg -patch" to rebuild the GUIDs in the private and public stores.
5. Go into Exchange Administrator, go to Properties on the server, and go to the Advanced tab.
6. Run Consistency Adjuster.

Problem: Consistency Adjuster needs the "Microsoft Exchange information Store" service to be running. Well, when I try to run Start the service, I get the following Services Manager error:

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service returned service specific error 1105.

The Event Viewer Shows the same error message.

Any help?

restore the dir.edb file also.ensure that priv.edb,pub.edb,dir.edb are restored to their respective directories.start the microsoft system attendant service, microsoft directory service and then run ISINTEG -patch. start all your services it should work.

Its not mandatory to run the consistency Adjuster.

All the above can work only if the configuration of the server is same as the configuration prior to the crash of the server.

The error 1105 has to do with hotfix not being applied.
Since the databases are service pack and/or version specific, you have to apply the hotfix and/or service pack that were applied on Exchnage server before.
I think your issue can be resolved by applying Q248838engi.exe on SP# of Exchange or by jumping into service pack 4 of Exchange.
You can download Q248838engi.exe from the link bellow.

Good Luck,
