Win2kServer Standard backup software.

When I run scheduled backups it returns an error saying that no unused media was available. I can manually run backups but do not know how to make 2000 use any media that is in the tape drive.
Any suggestions?
I did notice from the help files the /um switch is supposed to allow the backup use any available media but have been unsuccessful in this attempt.
Any suggestions/answers are greatly appreciated.

Roy,

I had the EXACT same problem, and here's how I solved it.
1) Stick a tape into the drive.
2) Go to "Removable Storage" (Computer Mgmt); In the Left pane choose Physical devices-->[your tape drive]-->media; and in the right pane right-click your tape and click properties.
3) Change the media name & the side name to something meaningful, but use the same name.
4) Close Removable Storage Console.
5) Start-->Run-->NTBACKUP.EXE.
6) Create, Schedule, and configure your job as follows; set it up to use the tape name whatever you named your tape. Set it up to rename the media the SAME name as it had. Name the Job the EXACT same name as the media, that way the job, media name, side name etc will all be identical.
NOW YOUR SCHEDULED BACKUP JOB SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY USE THE MEDIA.

One more thing, before actually running, it. Run a fake job (backup one file) and use the Media you named previously, just so that NTBACKUP will remember it.

This will solve your problem.

GOOD LUCK :)

Hi Roy & Pablo

I'm going crazy over this problem.

I have installed a Windows 2000 Small Business Server (SP1) at a customer. It is installed on a HP NetServer E800 with a built-in Sony DDS-2 DAT tapestreamer.

I have tried Pablo's solution and it actualy worked out very well... as long as only one and the same media was used...!

I'm using 3x5 medias (3 series with one individual media for every weekday). If I use Pablo's solution on more than one media, then it doesn't work any more... NTBACKUP will only use the first media created the "Pablo-way".

Any ideas gentlemen ;-)

Best Regards

HENRIK,

THE SOLUTION I HAVE FOUND FOR THAT PARTICULAR PROBLEM IS TO USE ONE ONE TAPE. I NAMED IT 'DAILY' AND I KEEP IT IN THE DRIVE MONDAY-THRU-SATURDAY. THAT WAY IT ALWAYS SEARCHES FOR THE MEDIA NAMED 'DAILY', AND FINDS IT IN THERE EVERYDAY. I DO A 'DIFFERENTIAL' BACKUP, SO IT ACCUMULATES THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. EVERY SUNDAY I USE A 'WEEK1, WEEK2, . . . TAPE' , AND RUN A 'NORMAL' BACKUP, WHICH RESETS THE 'ARCHIVE ATTRIBUTE'. THEN I START ALL OVER ON MONDAY. HOW FUN.

HOPE THIS SOLUTION WORKS OUT FOR YOU.

--GOOD LUCK--
