I have the task of swapping 2 servers, let me explain:
I've got a small NT4 Domain w/ 1 PDC, 1 member server, and 6 Win98 workstations. The PDC is an old P233 w/2 mirrored SCSI drives.
The member server is a PIII-550 that is acting as the internet gateway & printserver. I want to move the PDC to the PIII cpu and move the member server to the P233 cpu. Anybody have any suggestions on the best way to complete this task??

Thanks,
Hi Shane,
If you have abackup system, jut do a full backup of each server and then restore to the required machine. Else, you could use a tool such as ghost to do it (maybe?)
I'v done it through backups and that works. That's the way I'd do it again. Make sure you're confident with you're backup system though!
Regards
Matt

If they both have the same hardware Matt's suggestion will be fine. If not, you will at least have to do the restore and then rename the device drivers for the HD controller, and possibly install the correct video drivers, NIC drivers, etc. I would suggest you re-install NT onto the member server into the same directory, and make it a BDC. When that is done (let the replication of the SAM finish during setup) you will be able to go into Server Manager and promote that to the PDC. It will still leave the other machine as a BDC but since the new PDC is so much more powerful the BDC shouldn't get hit much.

If your member server is a BDC, promote it to PDC. This will make the PDC step down on your network. After, you can swap shares/folders if you wish between them. Quick and painless.
