On one of my exchange servers, I have 2, I noticed that my mail access was pausing for quite a while, especially between messages with attachments. During my troubleshooting I noticed that event 1221 has not been running for over a month now. This is the automatic online nightly defragmentation of the databases. I am suspecting this as causing the slowdowns. I did a full offline defragmentation of the public and private.edb files. It improved it somewhat but not back to original speed. I added 512mb of ram (total now 990meg), and rant the optimiser to adjust db locations according to it's analysis. I assigned 500 megabytes or RAM to Exchange server (since it now has 990meg). Once I realized that event 1221 was not running I reinstalled SP4 to try and get it to reinstall itself again (it was originally part of SP1). This did not help. Event 1221 is still not running. Has anyone else had problems post security patches. Any ideas on how to get the defragmenter working again. My other Exchange server still runs 1221 even after all the security patches. You help is greatly appreciated. Jim
