w2k event logs deleted and sql 7 stops

I'm running sql7 on a w2k server. I've had a problem, twice now, where SQL service stops "SQL Server is terminating due to 'stop' request from Service Control Manager." The problem is - i don't know why or who is doing this as my event logs also get deleted at the same time! I know this sounds as if someone is physically doing this, but that is highly unlikely. I don't suppose anyone has had something similar happen?
