For those situations when you want a third-party SSL certificate authority instead of a homegrown self-signed CA, you don't have to pay the moon to Thawte or Verisign.
Most Web hosting services offer shared CAs for an inexpensive fee. http://www.cacert.org/ does them for free. Free, I tell you! And they are every bit as good as the expensive ones.
