How do i install the exch2k system management tools on WinXP-Proffecional

Ed Exch @k tools don.t install becaulse the adminpak for Win2K server isn't installed, and that adminpak is incompatible with WinXP. The beta adminpak for .net server works on WinXP-proffesional, but isn.t right for the Exchange System managment tools.

We are using WinXP workstations on a Win2K servers

thanks

Bad News...Simply can't be done. Microsoft has yet to release an ESM that is XP compitable. Trust me when I say that you arent the only one who is unhappy about this. Of course, if someone has found a way to make it work, please let the rest of us know. I basically have to terminal service the Ex servers to work on them. Another option is to purchase something like VMWare to run a 2k system within your XP system to use the tools.

Thanks,
Rick

It CAN be done!

We are in the same scenario that you have - WinXP workstations on a Win2K server domain with Exchange 2000. What you have to do is the following:

1. Install the adminpak.msi from the i386 folder on the Win2K server CD. Ignore the warning that it won't work. Most of the tools will be functional, with the exception of the AD Users and Computers console.

2. Install the admin tools for Exchange. It will detect that you have the Win2K admin pack installed and allow you to finish the install.

3. Install the adminpak.msi from the Win2003 Server CDROM. It will overwrite the Win2K admin pack install and allow you to open AD Users and Computers. Don't forget to enable the "Advanced Features" by going to VIEW---->ADVANCED FEATURES in the AD users and computers MMC.

If you have problems with step 3, you may need to have SP1 applied for WinXP, or you can install this patch:

If you don't have a Win2003 Server CD, you can download the adminpak.msi from here:
