Hello, I am an IT intern and I have a question concerning the cabling for a new office network using Win Server 2k3. We just moved from one office space to another and we are looking to create a new wireless network. Our goal is to authenticate and manage users with Active Directory, while maintaining the functionality of a wireless router. So I guess I have a couple questions: 1) Is what I've proposed possible? I know one has to run DNS on server 2k3, in order to work with Active Directory, but does one have to turn on DHCP? The wireless router is perfectly capable of handing out IP addresses. 2) How should I cable? I was thinking DSL Modem cabled to wireless router, ethernet from router to switch, and ethernet from proposed Domain Controller to switch, switch to LAN.

I'm doing this for the first time; as I said, I'm an intern. I would appreciate any help at all.

Thanks,

That topology is functional, but may not have the performance to handle more than 2 or 3 wireless connections.

Make sure that there is wireless coverage throughout the office by doing signal strength/interference measurements. If you are in a multi-tenant location, often many channels are in use creating enough interference that additional wireless access points are required.

Keep in mind that wireless is shared and functions like a hub rather than a switch. Depending on the amount of traffic, an 802.11g network can slow down very quickly. If a PC location has a choice between wired and wireless connections, wired is much faster and more reliable than wireless.
