DMIO errors

We're seeing the following error on one of our production servers:

dmio: Harddisk0 read error at block 448932519: status 0xc000009a

Compaq insight mgr is not picking this up or throwing an SNMP trap (which you would think if it is a hardware issue). Very little documentation on what DMIO is (disk mgmt IO?)

Anyone received anything similar?

Not running on a SAN.

We're getting these DMIO erros on ALL of our SQL2000 servers running on top of Win2000 on Compaq 8500s with local disks, mostly RAID 0+1. Sometimes these do not seem to cause any problems, other times they've caused backups to fail. Subsequent DBCCs show no problems w/in our DBs, so far.

We've discussed rebuilding the disks as "basic" disks (they're "dynamic" right now) since we only see these errors on "dynamic" disks, but our team is split on this at the moment. Some of our boxes have both basic & dynamic disks, and the errors only occur on the dynamic disks.

Worst thing about this is apparent lack of knowledge at MS and Compaq of this issue, and how to resolve it. We've had ongoing dialog with them for several months, no good solution & the errors are still occuring. Next we're going to try OS patch.

Hi Derek,

we have had the same problem on several Compaq servers. We have been able to reproduce the problem and Compaq gave us the following workaround after an examination in their testlab:

We had to change the following registry key and reboot the server:
HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/CPQCISSM/Parameters/Device/NumberofRequests was changed from 0xff (255) to 0x40 (64)

Since this change we didn´t have the problem again.
