Hi
if got this lil problem with a win 2k server where someone connects to it via RDC to work on it. Some time ago, he couldnt log in all of a sudden. He gets the standard error msg:
The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer.
Are there any standard procedures to check if something got screwed up?

Is everyone denied access to the server via RDC or just this user?
Is it one specific system or all systems, LAN or WAN?

1)
all users cant connect, neiher him nor admin account
2)
he s running XP Pro at his home, we re running 2k Pro with the RDC client installed, both systems doesnt work.
3)
we cant connect neither from wihin the LAN nor from WAN
the status is always "ConnectQuery" for a short while, then the user gets disconnected.

Is the Internet Connection Firewall enabled on the XP Client (which may prevent the return connection) or is PORT 3389 not being allow through the firewall or blocked at the routers?

firewall in XP is deactivated, besides, win 2k pro doesnt have that firewall and cant connect as well.
the port is open on WAN and LAN side
as said, the terminal status windows says "ConnectQuery" for a short time, it shows a computer symbol in that time and then it disocnnects.

Yes, I realize that the W2K does not have the firewall client which is why I mentioned "Is the Internet Connection Firewall enabled on the XP Client " but its good to bring that up to avoid confusion.
What is running on the Windows 2000 server, is it Terminal Services in remote administration mode or have you installed the RDC client on it? (I think you stated that you added the client)
Can the XP client connect to another system? Can other systems connect to the XP Client?
Can the Server connect to another system? Can other systems connect to the Server?

ok now we re slowly gettin to the point where i lack the resources to test all this :)
the win 2k server is running in application mode and is running the terminal services
i only installed the RDC client on my notebook (windows 2000 pro) to test it from my side since the customer affected by this problem lives a few hundred miles away. sorry if that caused any troubles.
Can the XP client connect to another system? Can other systems connect to the XP Client?
couldnt test that yet. i was able to connect with my notebook to another win 2k server running RDC (note: right after i connected to the other server, the same problem occured but after a router-reset and a server-restart the problem solved itself. not so on the customer's system)
Can the Server connect to another system? Can other systems connect to the Server?
im not sure if i understand that question. the server is accessible by LAN and WAN, there is a VPN connection installed which runs as planned. the server responds to pings and MS network queries

What I was trying to get at here was, can the Server open a session (from a local log on) to another RDC connection?
"Can the Server connect to another system? Can other systems connect to the Server?
im not sure if i understand that question. the server is accessible by LAN and WAN, there is a VPN connection installed which runs as planned. the server responds to pings and MS network queries"
I want to see if the connection is failing going OUT from the server side or if its an IN only issue

well i solved it.
somehow.
i re-installed the terminalservices and installed the license server.
now it works again. another MS mystery (not) solved. :D
thx for the try gunderstone

Did you have the license server installed before or did you just install it now?
If the default time period (90 days I believe) passes without the licensing server installed it will stop functioning.

no, the license server wasnt installed. maybe that was the error. strangely i didnt get any error saying that the temp licenses were invalid o something like that. oh well would've been too easy...
but i have a new problem:
i want a user to have RDC access.
problem:
if i put the user in domain-users, its DOENST work
if i put the user in domain-admins, it DOES work
i dont want every user that accesses the server via RDC to have admin rights (some of them are smart enough to ruin the server within minutes)
is there a possibility to give a user normal user-rights PLUS RDC?

Remote Desktop Connection has its own palce to configure who can access the system (Administrators can by default)
Go to System Properties of the machine you want to allow access to and choose the Remote Tab and from there select Select Remote Users and choose the users you want to allow

Remote Desktop Connection cn be found on Windows XP systems by going to the Control Panel --> System --> and choosing the remote tab.
If you want to allow users to connect to Windows 2000 Server that is set up as a terminal server via RDC, you need to set their permissions on the terminal server.
