Hi,

Does anyone know any way of setting the prefered server for a workstation to authenticate with? I want to make sure a particular workstation always tries a particular BDC before broadcasting/WINS requesting a BDC.

Also, When you do a WINS request for logon servers is NT intelligent enough to notice that a BDC is on it's subnet and try that one first?

Cheers.

Hi Ian,

You can use the setprfdc.exe utility (Set Preferred DC) to do what you are asking.

usage 'setprfdc <trusted domain> <domain controller>'

let me know if you cannot get hold of te utility. I can email it to you. You'll need to make sure the PC executes the command at every boot.

Also WINS in NT is not intelligent enough to check whether a requested machine is on the same subnet as the requesting machine.

You could have different WINS servers for different subnets and each only has static entries in it's database for the DC's on it's subnet???

hope above helps.
