I am doing an evaluation of NT tape backup software in an environment that requires very high availability and recovery of remote servers. What experiences have you had on the Seagate Backup Exec and Cheyenne/CA ARCServe products, especially in this type of environment? Thanks for your help!

I recently went through the same stuff as you did for a new customer, but it all depends on what you want it to do.
I honestly had some very bad experiences with ArcServe so I won`t recommend it to you. The problems we had were: Database corruption, not backing up registry properly and not backing up Exchange properly.
Also when we had the problems with the database, Cheyenne (read: CA) did not react (and very late) to our call for help, so service is not what you want.

Besides Arcserve and Backup Exec (I use this at home) you could also take a look at Ultrabac and Legato Networker. But again, it depends on what you want & need.

Our company, before I arrived, decided on using Backup Exec for a brand new
NT server. The problem. Once the server crashed, as servers tend to do, we went to restore from an back created with BackUp Exec. But the trouble was, Backup Exec did no reconigize the tapes it had created in the past. Seagate support gave us some lame excuse about since the tape label database was gone, Backup exec did not reconigize the tape a one with info on it. It only saw it as a tape that needed to be formatted before it was usable. Making a restore impossible. Needless to say, we no longer us back-up Exec. We have been using ArcServe for about 9 months now, with no trouble.

well, i`ll ride the fence on this one! i use backupexec enterprise on our lan, and have had no trouble with it (knock on wood!). However a friend of mine at a global textile manufacturer recently moved all of his sites from BackupExec to ArcServe, and recommends it hands down.

I would suggest you try them both out thoroughly before making any final decisions on your backup platform and technology!
