Intranet setup basics

I'm sorry if this is a basic and over-generallised question, but I am trying to set up an intranet application over our network and I'm not sure where to start. I've searched the web, but can't seem to find any begginner's info on this.

Are there any web resources that people know of that could take me through the basic configuration process for setting up our network server to also serve web sites to workstations?
