I have recently installed Outlook 2000 on my desktop, which is XP. When trying to setup my Exchange account to access my mail and other information, I receive the following error:

"The name could not be resolved. Network problems are preventing connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists."

- I am currently behind a NAT firewall.
- I can access the Exchange server via Outlook Web Access from the same machine.
- I can ping the server.

Please help, I am not sure what else needs to be done.

Brian,
How are you pinging the Exchange box? IP address, fully qualified domain name or Netbios name?

I am having the exact same problem as Brian -- and to answer Whistler, in my instance I can ping the Exchange box by all methods you desribe without a problem, but for whatever reason, all of a suddden, response time to the Exchange server has started getting worse and worse, and now it is to the point where it can take 30 minutes to get in after numereous "time outs" in trying to log into the exchange server via outlook. All machines involved have been rebooted, and the server has plenty of memory, and all services are running and look fine. As with Brian, access via Outlook Web Access works instantaneously....what's going on here??? HELP, as I am stumped. Everything was working fine for weeks, and then workstations started getting switched over to XP from Windows 98, and this started happening --- though I don't see the connection since XP was already present, it's just that EVERYONE is running XP now...

Thanks in advance!

Try below,
It sounds like an authentication problem. Try changing the following registry value. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetcontrolLS ALMCompatibilityLevel to a 2.
Windows NT supports Windows NT challenge/response and LanManager (LM) challenge/response. The valid data values are:

0 - Send LM and Windows NT authentication (default).
1 - Send Windows NT authentication and LM authentication only if the server requests it.
2 - Never send LM authentication.

If that doesn't work try when you get the problem running ipconfig /registerdns.

Whistler.

make sure you can ping by server name. or even you can try using ip address instead of exchange server name.

your best friend for this is MS- TECHNET. it has the solution.

YOu may be able to put the exchange server name in the hosts file in the /winnt/system32/drivers/etc/ dir
Just add the info after the last line. I have seen this on different platforms (9x/nt4/2000) and this fixes the problem. If you move the IP of the exchange server, you will have to remember to change this file.

example
192.168.1.23 exchg0 exchg0.domain.com
