I'm installing IIS4 (on a new server). It's NT4 SP4. I'm installing from the NT4 Option Pack. After all the files get copied, the setup begins creating the default www and ftp sites. It gets through the www site, but then inetinfo.exe crashes (0xc05) when trying to create the first ftp site. It's an application error (I get a visit from Dr. Watson) not a STOP event (blue screen of death).

I found one lame knowledgebase article that claims the error was triggered because Control Panel was open during the install! (really!) So, I uninstalled and reinstalled making sure to keep Control Panel closed. Boom. It blows up again.

After I clear the Dr. Watson dialog, the setup continues happily, then begs for a restart. After the server bounces, any attempt to start the WWW or FTP service causes the same inetinfo.exe exception. Clues?

I resolved this by removing VDO Live, MS Outlook Express, and MS Wallet and THEN installing the NT Option Pack. The three things that I removed were installed by Internet Explorer 4.0, which is REQUIRED before the Option Pack will install! What is up with that???

I can understand the mandatory IE4, since the documentation requires it (it has some controls that IE3 can't handle), but WHY should OE and VDO Live be installed by default on my SERVER?!?!?
