Multiple Private Information Stores? Good/Bad idea?

I am trying to gather information on the following:

1. Pros and cons of creating multiple private information stores versus a single private information store on a single Exchange 5.5 server.
2. Pros and cons of using a private information store versus private storage (.pst) files.
